River Cruise FAQ

European River Cruise FAQ

Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

Answered by Melissa Yetter, Cruisin Couple Travel Agency

This page exists because the same questions come up in nearly every river cruise conversation I have with a new client. I have sailed more than twenty river cruise ships across Europe, attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo multiple years, and hold certified specialist designations from AmaWaterways, Viking River Cruises, Scenic, and Riverside Luxury Cruises. These answers come from that experience, not from a brochure.

The Basics

The Basics

What is a European river cruise?
A European river cruise is a vacation aboard a small ship, typically carrying 130 to 190 passengers, that sails inland waterways through the heart of Europe. Ships dock in historic city centers and small riverside villages, often within walking distance of the main attractions. The pace is unhurried, the scenery is constant, and nearly everything is included on most luxury lines.
How is river cruising different from ocean cruising?
River cruises use much smaller ships on inland waterways, which means you dock in places large ocean ships can never reach. The experience is more intimate, more culturally immersive, and more relaxed. You wake up in a different city or village almost every day. There are no sea days, no formal nights, and no rock-and-roll motion from ocean swells.
Who is river cruising best suited for?
River cruising is an outstanding fit for well-traveled couples who have done ocean cruising and want something more personal and more immersive. It is also ideal for travelers who want Europe at a slower pace, who prefer smaller ships and smaller groups, and who value cultural depth over onboard entertainment.
Are river cruises good for first-time cruisers?
Yes, with the right expectations. River cruises are gentler and more intimate than ocean cruises. There is no motion sickness from ocean swells. The focus is on the destination rather than the ship. For travelers who have been hesitant about ocean cruising, a river cruise is often a more comfortable entry point.

Cruise Lines

Choosing the Right Line

What are the best luxury river cruise lines?
The four lines we specialize in at Cruisin Couple Travel Agency are AmaWaterways, Viking River Cruises, Scenic, and Riverside Luxury Cruises. Each delivers a genuinely excellent experience at a different price point and with a different onboard culture. The right line depends on your travel style, your budget, and what you value most in a vacation.
What is the difference between AmaWaterways and Viking?
AmaWaterways tends to attract travelers who want a more active excursion program, the twin-balcony cabin design, and a culinary-focused onboard experience. Viking appeals to travelers who prefer a more understated Scandinavian aesthetic and a slightly more independent shore experience. Both are excellent. The choice comes down to personal preference.
What is the difference between Scenic and other luxury river cruise lines?
Scenic sits at the ultra-luxury end of the river cruise market. It is truly all-inclusive including premium spirits and gratuities, offers butler service on every cabin, and provides exclusive Scenic Enrich experiences unavailable on any other line. It carries a higher price point than AmaWaterways or Viking and delivers a meaningfully different level of service and inclusion.
What makes Riverside Luxury Cruises different?
Riverside is one of the newest luxury river cruise lines in Europe. The ships are strikingly modern, the all-inclusive model is genuine, and the service standards are among the highest in the category. For travelers who want a contemporary luxury experience on newer ships, Riverside is a compelling choice.
Is Viking worth the price?
Yes, for the right traveler. Viking delivers consistent quality, substantive included excursions, beautiful ship design, and an adults-only experience across all sailings. It is not the cheapest option and it is not the most all-inclusive, but it delivers exceptional value for what it charges.

Planning

Planning and Booking

When is the best time to take a European river cruise?
Spring, from April through June, and fall, from August through October, are the most popular seasons. The weather is mild, the light is beautiful, and the rivers are typically at good levels. Christmas market sailings in November and December are among the most magical experiences in river cruising and book up very early.
How far in advance should I book a river cruise?
For peak sailings, particularly Christmas markets and popular spring and fall departures, we recommend booking 12 to 18 months in advance. The best cabins and the most sought-after departure dates go first. Contact us as early as possible.
Do I need a travel advisor to book a river cruise?
You do not need one, but working with a certified specialist makes a meaningful difference. A specialist knows the deck plans, the cabin categories, the itinerary nuances, and the promotions that are not always visible to the public. More importantly, a specialist is your advocate when something goes wrong, and on a river cruise, things occasionally do.
What should I look for in a river cruise travel advisor?
Look for someone who has sailed these ships personally, holds certified specialist designations from the lines they recommend, and has a track record of placing clients successfully on river cruise itineraries. Credentials matter. Experience matters more.
How do I know which itinerary is right for me?
Start with the river, then the ports, then the line. Every major European river offers a different cultural experience. The Danube is history and architecture. The Rhine is scenery and wine country. The Seine is France and Normandy. The Douro is Portugal's wine country. Once we know what interests you most, the right itinerary becomes clear.

Onboard

The Onboard Experience

What is a French balcony?
A French balcony is a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door that opens to let fresh air in but does not have space to step outside. It is standard on most river cruise ships. AmaWaterways offers twin-balcony cabins that include both a French balcony and a full outside balcony.
What is included in a luxury river cruise?
Most luxury river cruises include all meals, wine and beer with meals, guided shore excursions at every port, and Wi-Fi. Premium spirits, specialty dining, and optional excursions may carry an additional cost depending on the line. Scenic and Riverside Luxury include premium beverages and gratuities in the base fare.
How many passengers are on a typical river cruise ship?
Most European river cruise ships carry between 130 and 190 passengers. These are intimate ships by any standard, especially compared to ocean cruise vessels carrying 2,000 to 7,000 passengers.
Is there a dress code on river cruises?
River cruises are significantly more casual than most ocean cruises. Smart casual is the standard for evening dining on most lines. There are no formal nights. Comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions are essential.
What happens if water levels are too low or too high?
River water levels can affect itineraries, particularly on the Rhine and Danube. When water levels prevent safe passage, itineraries are adjusted. This may mean busing guests between ports or modifying the route. This is an industry-wide reality. Comprehensive travel protection is essential for this reason.

Value

Costs and Value

How much does a European river cruise cost?
Luxury European river cruises typically range from $4,000 to $10,000 or more per person depending on the line, the itinerary, the cabin category, and the time of year. Most luxury lines include excursions, meals, and beverages in that price, which makes the all-in cost more competitive than it may initially appear.
Is travel insurance required for a river cruise?
It is not legally required, but we strongly recommend it for every client without exception. River cruising is subject to weather events, water level conditions, and itinerary changes outside anyone's control.
Are gratuities included?
On Scenic and Riverside Luxury Cruises, gratuities are included in the fare. On AmaWaterways and Viking, gratuities are customary and typically range from $12 to $18 per person per day. We walk every client through the full cost picture before any deposit is made.

Still Have Questions?

River cruising is a nuanced category and the right answer depends on your specific travel style, your travel history, and what you are hoping to experience. We are here to help you figure it out.
