As River Cruise Specialists at Cruisin Couple Travel Agency, we get this question almost every day. Travelers often assume a cruise is a cruise, but river cruising and ocean cruising are two very different experiences. Here are the three biggest differences, plus answers to the questions we hear most often.

What Is the Main Difference Between a River Cruise and an Ocean Cruise?

The main difference comes down to ship size and where the ship can dock. River cruise ships are smaller, often carrying between 100 and 200 guests, and they can sail directly into the heart of a city. Ocean cruise ships are much larger, sometimes carrying thousands of guests, and they typically dock at a port outside the city center, requiring a bus or shuttle to reach the main attractions.

1. Smaller Ships Mean You Dock in the Heart of Town

A river cruise ship can tie up right along the riverbank in the middle of a city. Step off the ship in Vienna and you are already there, no bus required. Ocean ships, by contrast, often dock several miles outside the city they are visiting, which means more time in transit and less time exploring.

2. River Cruises Offer an All Inclusive Feel

Most river cruises include shore excursions, wine and beer with meals, and WiFi as part of the fare. This makes budgeting simple and removes the guesswork of deciding what to add on once you are onboard. Ocean cruises can offer this too, but it is more often an upgrade rather than the standard.

3. No Sea Days Means a New City Every Day

River cruises typically move overnight while you sleep, so you wake up in a new city almost every morning. There are no sea days spent simply enjoying the ship, which is ideal for travelers who want to maximize their time exploring rather than relaxing onboard. Ocean cruises usually include at least one or two sea days, which some travelers love and others consider a missed opportunity to see more.

Which Cruise Type Is Right for You?

If you love history, architecture, and walking right into a new town each morning, a river cruise is likely the better fit. If you prefer a larger ship with more onboard entertainment, multiple dining venues, and the option to simply relax at sea for a day, an ocean cruise may suit you better. Many of our clients eventually try both, since the two experiences complement each other rather than compete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a River Cruise More Expensive Than an Ocean Cruise?

River cruises often look more expensive on the surface because so much is included in the fare. Once you factor in excursions, drinks, and gratuities that are often extra on an ocean cruise, the total cost can end up similar or even favor the river cruise.

Are River Cruises Good for First Time Cruisers?

Yes. River cruises tend to be smaller and more intimate, with a slower pace and easier navigation onboard, which many first time cruisers find less overwhelming than a large ocean ship.

What Are the Best Rivers to Cruise in Europe?

The Danube, the Rhine, the Seine, and the Douro are among the most popular rivers for European river cruising, each offering a different mix of cities, vineyards, and countryside.
