AmaWaterways · Ship Review
A firsthand look at AmaWaterways’ intimate Danube ship, from an AmaWaterways Certified Specialist who sailed her at the ASTA River Cruise Expo 2023.
Section One
Stepping onto the AmaViola after having experienced the AmaMagna is a study in contrast, and a wonderful one at that. The AmaViola is smaller and more intimate, and that difference is felt immediately. Where the AmaMagna impresses with grandeur and space, the AmaViola welcomes you with warmth and a sense of community that builds quickly among guests and crew alike.
The design is bold and bright. The color palette is more vibrant than you might expect, and it gives the ship a personality that is entirely its own. The entry is not as grand as the AmaMagna, but that is completely expected on a standard-width river vessel, and it does not diminish the experience for a moment. This is a beautiful, comfortable ship with a lot of character.
I sailed the AmaViola as part of the ASTA River Cruise Expo 2023, traveling from Budapest to Vilshofen, and it left a lasting impression that had nothing to do with the itinerary and everything to do with the people on board.
What I Noticed
The Right Fit
The AmaViola is a wonderful fit for:
Honest Counsel
The AmaViola is not the right fit for everyone, and I believe in being honest about that.
Onboard
I stayed in a stateroom with the AmaWaterways twin balcony design, and it is one of those features that sounds nice in a brochure and turns out to be genuinely transformative in person. You have both a French balcony, where the full glass door opens to let the river air and scenery in, and a separate outside sitting balcony where you can actually step out and sit as the Danube moves past you.
On a river cruise where the scenery never stops, having two ways to experience it from your own cabin is a detail that matters more than most guests anticipate until they experience it. The cabin itself was comfortable and well-appointed, with everything you need and nothing wasted.
Onboard
Dining on the AmaViola was very good throughout the sailing, with regionally focused menus that honored the destinations we were visiting.
The standout experience was the Chef’s Table, located in the aft of the ship. This is a specialty dining experience that accommodates approximately six tables and offers a multi-course meal in an intimate, unhurried setting. It is one of those evenings that becomes a highlight of the entire cruise.
Make your reservation for the Chef’s Table as soon as you board. It fills quickly and it is worth planning around.
The main dining room was warm and social, the kind of setting where conversations between tables happen naturally and where you find yourself lingering long after the meal is finished.
Ashore
Route: Budapest to Vilshofen · Ports: Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Krems, Linz, Passau, Vilshofen
AmaWaterways structures excursions into CLASSIC, GENTLE, and ACTIVE tiers so guests of different energy levels and abilities can each find the right pace at every port. I find this model to be one of AmaWaterways’ strongest differentiators.
Guided tours well-suited to guests who prefer a comfortable pace and curated commentary.
A lighter version of the same destinations, ideal for those who want to see the sights without extended walking.
Genuinely active options for guests who want to move. The complimentary bicycles on board make it easy to explore on two wheels.
Onboard
The AmaViola carries the AmaWaterways design philosophy with confidence. The color palette is bold and bright, giving the ship a personality that feels more vibrant and playful than some of her sister ships. Common areas are comfortable and well-designed for the intimate scale of the vessel.
The twin balcony stateroom design is one of AmaWaterways’ most celebrated innovations, and the AmaViola carries it beautifully. The Chef’s Table in the aft is a design choice that elevates the dining experience and gives the ship a distinctive specialty venue that guests talk about throughout the sailing.
Because the AmaViola is a standard-width river vessel, she can navigate the river locks, which is an experience in itself. Watching the ship enter a lock and the water level shift around you is one of those quietly remarkable moments that reminds you how different river cruising is from anything else.
The People
The service on the AmaViola was warm, attentive, and deeply personal. The crew members come from all over the world and they bring genuine care to everything they do.
What I will tell you from personal experience is this: the connections you make with the AmaViola crew do not end when the sailing does. When we returned to the Danube for a subsequent cruise, we sent a message to our AmaViola crew members. They happened to be docked at the same port, and we walked down to say hello. They welcomed us like family. We reach out every time we return to the river.
That is not something you can manufacture. It reflects the kind of people AmaWaterways attracts and retains as crew, and it is one of the quiet reasons I recommend this cruise line with complete confidence.
The cruise director on our sailing was fantastic and set the tone for the entire experience from day one.
Planning
The Budapest to Vilshofen routing is the classic Danube itinerary and the AmaViola sails it beautifully. I recommend this sailing particularly for guests who want to experience the river locks, explore the Wachau Valley, and end the journey with the Oktoberfest celebration in Passau.
AmaWaterways also offers specialty themed sailings on this route including music, wine, and golf itineraries. If any of those themes speak to you, they are worth exploring. They attract a wonderful mix of guests and create a built-in community on board from the very first day.
Book early. The Chef’s Table fills quickly and the best cabin categories go well in advance.
The Verdict
9
out of 10 overall
The AmaViola does not offer everything the AmaMagna does, and she is not meant to. She is a smaller, more intimate ship with a different kind of magic. If the AmaMagna is the grand hotel of river cruising, the AmaViola is the boutique property where everyone knows your name by day two. Both earn my highest recommendation, for different travelers with different priorities.
